Crytek’s New Business Model: VR First, Pay As You Like

Crytek is going all in with its latest risky manoeuvre. It started with a game engine and game developer. With inception of far cry came out its game engine which drove pixels and 3D graphics into the game. It was excellent at that point in time. After nearly a decade and going on, CryTek has become a full time game engine developer.

CRYENGINE V is given for free. It is shifting to an unorthodox but much needed business model of pay what you want thus approximately giving the developers much more than they would get if they sold the product. However it is risky as if game engine is buggy they will have to face the consequences. CryTek too is developing a game engine with amazon called lumberyard which is nothing but CRYENGINE with some changes. It is also creating a benchmark engine. CryTek and AMD are working together on VR adopting liquid VR technology for VR. CRYENGINE V is not just fifth instalment of a game engine instead it is a new starting. From now on all engines and business models will shift to VR first model hence offering dedicated support for VR. VR study is also done in schools and colleges.

First VR lab was setup in Istanbul where applications for hundred more labs has come. Interest of the society in VR is far more than anticipation of community which seems like a good problem to have. Community will setup more labs in those areas and some more.

NVidia Came from hardware manufacturing and now is manufacturing CUDA and is aggressively pushing it into universities. Cuda is used by more than three grand universities now for GPU computing processes. Every computer science student had to start from using CUDA no matter what his specialization was. CryTek by giving latest graphics engine for free is positioning itself in an upper hand position. It is going to push into virtual reality after supplying the game engine for free into the labs.
